Charles Street is the main thoroughfare running north through Baltimore. It divides West from East Baltimore. This hike takes you from the Inner Harbor, through downtown and then into the Mount Vernon and Midtown Neighborhoods. After leaving the modern office towers you enter an area of grand nineteenth century townhouses. This is where Baltimore’s Gilded Age gentry resided and is now a culturally rich downtown environ.
Mile 0 – Begin at the Baltimore Visitor Center. Take Conway Street behind the center by crossing Light Street. Go one block
to Charles Street
Mile .20 – Take a right on Charles Street and head north
Mile 1.1 – Washington Monument…Continue north on Charles Street
The Washington Monument here predates the more famous Washington D.C. version by half a century. You can climb up the monument and enjoy some stunning views of downtown. Also on Mount Vernon Square are the Walters Art Museum and Peabody

Mile 1.45 – Right on Chase Street at the Belvedere condominium
The Belvedere was a grand old hotel that was converted into condos. The bar on the thirteenth floor has one of the best views
of downtown Baltimore in the city.

You will pass the Enoch Pratt Free Library on your right and The Basilica of the Assumption on your left on this leg. This Catholic
Basilica is the oldest in the United States.
Mile 2.3 – Left on Saratoga Street
Mile 2.5 – Right on St. Paul Street. St Paul becomes Light Street after Baltimore Street
